Character & Canon: Jesse Anderson & Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
District: Orlea

Personality:
Hailing from North Academy, Jesse Anderson ranks among the top Dual Monsters duelists in the world, his reputation as the “kid with the crystal beast deck” often preceding him. Due to his seemingly single-minded love for Dual Monsters and his upbeat nature, the students at Duel Academy frequently accuse him of being Jaden Yuki’s twin; indeed, the two share much in common and become fast friends, yet several key factors define Jesse as being more than merely “Jaden with a southern accent.”

Although Jesse maintains a positive attitude in most situations, even coming off as being a bit of a joker, there are moments that belie his perpetual cheer. Jesse is sharp, observant, and cautious when he needs to be; he arrives at Dual Academy already well-informed of the opponents that he might face, indicating that he plans ahead where he can instead of throwing himself blindly into duels. At the same time, some of Jaden’s more naïve or childish comments seem to be cause for concern on Jesse’s part, and some of the reason why he sticks to Jaden’s side like glue might be due to a feeling of protectiveness over his more impulsive friend. Preferring to remain level-headed, to think things through before acting, and to play the peace keeper if need be, at times Jesse can act as a measure to keep Jaden in check and to hold him back from initial impulses that might otherwise get the two of them into trouble. Above all, Jesse is a loyal friend, and one who is willing to make sacrifices for the well-being of the people that he cares about.

Jesse approaches each and every duel with passion of the sort that only someone who truly loves Duel Monsters can muster. He duels ferociously and he duels to win, but first and foremost he duels because he loves the game – Jesse isn’t the sort of duelist to simply tear apart his opponent’s deck, even when he has the opportunity to do so. Instead, Jesse asserts that he is more interested in playing fun combos than those that will most easily guarantee his victory; he prefers to see his opponent’s deck in action so that he can study and learn from his opponent’s strategies, which is the very reason he claims that he duels in the first place. Even when facing loss, Jesse will crack a joke and compliment his opponent on a game well played, always willing to laugh at his own mistakes as opposed to being a sore loser.

Questions/Comments/Concerns: It’s my intention to take Jesse from the point where the dub leaves off. Although there are four seasons of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX in the original Japanese, the dub ends with season three, where Jesse has recently been released from the clutches of Yubel, an angry duel spirit who possesses him and forces him to commit numerous atrocities in order to claim her revenge on Jaden. Before Jaden’s final duel against Yubel in an alternate universe, Jesse loans Jaden his famous Crystal Beast deck, yet Jaden never actually returns to Duel Academy at the very end. Instead, we’re told that Jaden is “out there, among the stars,” at which point the dub comes to a close. Working off this ending, Jesse will not be in possession of his trademark Dual Monsters deck, having to deal with the loss of his Crystal Beasts as well as that of his best friend – who he presumes to be dead – at the same time as he attempts to recover from the trauma of having been possessed by Yubel.
